News from Quilt and Sew January 2020

News from Quilt and Sew

Just a reminder:

We are sewing this weekend.. come and join us!

Quilts of Valor is a program whose goal is to award quilts to service men and women as a means of thanking them for their selfless service to our country.

The QUILTS OF VALOR (QOV) FOUNDATION National SEW DAY is Saturday, February 1, and the Golden QOV group is making a weekend out of it. We are sewing Friday, January 31, through Sunday, February 2. We will meet in Trenton at The Trenton Schoolhouse (formerly known as The Community Center) for this worthy sewing cause. The fun begins on Friday and Saturday from 8:30-6:00, and on Sunday from 10:00-4:00. Call the shop to register so we can have a goody bag ready for you. Otherwise, come when you can; help as you are able. We need people cutting, sewing, and pressing. Bring your machine and the basics.  Bring a couple of friends with you, and set up an assembly line. Or, come by yourself and we will plug you in where you can be most helpful. We will have kits made up, ready to sew. Or, you may bring your own QOV project to complete. Our goal is to get as many quilt tops assembled as we can!

We are having pot luck for lunch. We have the meats and drinks, just bring a side or dessert to share.

***Calling all longarm quilters! We sure can use your help. We have tops that need to be quilted. We can provide the backing and the batting, we just need your time and talent. This is where we seem to get behind in the quilt making process. And, of course, there is the binding…. Anyone out there like to bind? Let us know if you can help.

Call the shop to register and for more info 270-466-5000.

****We have a QOV quilt presentation for 2 veterans planned for Saturday at 2 pm at the Sew Day.

Thanks for all you do!-- Denise

  • Cut fabric into 7 1/2" squares of white or cream(light) and your red or blue(dark).
  •  Lay a light and dark square, right sides together.
  • Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the light piece.
  • Sew ¼” from the line on both sides.
  • Cut on drawn line.
  •  Press seam toward the dark/red or blue fabric.
  • Trim unit to 6 1/2" square.
  • Tah Dah! You are done.

It takes a village to get things done, so your participation is appreciated.

UFO CLUB 2020 has already begun, but it is not too late to join! What is a UFO? It is an Unfinished Fabric Object, and if you are like me, I am sure you have a few of them lying around! Joining our UFO club will help you complete some of those projects! Club meets the first Saturday of each month at 9:00. Come check us out! It is a great way to meet new friends and to gain inspiration and motivation. If you have any questions, just ask. Forms are available in the store, or just show up on February 1st

BEGINNING QUILTING:Tuesday evenings, February 4, 11, 18, & 25, from 6:00-9:00. Since February’s weather is fickle at best, we have found that a 10-12 week Quilting 101 class ends up lasting a lot longer due to weather cancellations. So, Denise has designed a mini winter class for beginners to learn the basics of quilting—from cutting, to piecing, to setting, to finishing. Students will be constructing a 3 block table runner in this class. Fee is $50 + fabric & supplies. Please register for this class ASAP as spots are limited.

DIAMOND LOG CABIN STAR QUILT CLASS: February 21 & 22, from 9:00-4:00.
This may be your last chance to take a class with Carol Thurston, as she is
moving out of state. This class features an original design by Carol, one that
is breathtaking! Her pattern is included in the class fee. You will need to cut
your strips ahead of time, so please sign up early and get your supply list. This
class is appropriate for quilters with intermediate to advanced piecing skills. You
will also need the Clearview 60 degree triangle ruler (10 or 12 inch ), in addition
to your fabrics. Fee is $75.

TRENTON HANDWORK GROUP meets monthly each FIRST TUESDAY of the month from 10:00 am—1:00 pm in the Quilt and Sew classroom. If you want to learn new techniques, find portable projects, and share the latest in English paper piecing, red-work, embroidery, and more, this group is for you! Come join us, bring a project or idea, and bring your lunch. Call the shop for more details. 270-466-5000.

THURSDAY SIT & SEWS:February 6, 13, 27, from 10:00-5:00. “Friend & Fabric Therapy Sessions.” See description above.

TRUNK QUILTS CHARITY SEWING: February 20, from 10:00-4:00. See description above.

CLASSROOM MINI RETREAT: February 28, 29, & March 1. Our classroom mini retreats offer you the chance to set up your work station and leave it all in place for multiple days if desired. It is a time of sewing, socializing, relaxing, unwinding. Plus, you will get a lot accomplished in your time. It is also a great chance to continue working on any class projects you were unable to finish within the time constraints of class. Doors open at 9:00 am. Many ladies choose to stay long past 5:00. As long as one of the key holders is available to stay late, you can, too!

LORI HOLT VINTAGE HOUSEWIFE SEW ALONG began January 27th! You may sign up for her weekly blog posts at where she gives you the pattern for the weekly block and walks you through her construction process. She also features a lovely narrative describing her inspiration for that particular block.. We will also be beginning a new Lori Holt club where you can come and work on any Lori Holt project you desire. Watch future newsletters for further details on that program.

***Edit: As of publication, 5 of the 6 kits have been reserved!

MYSTERY BLOCK OF THE MONTH (BOM) BEGINNING in February. This is a 12 month program, featuring fabric and instructions for one block per month. Each block will be $5.
