QUILT & SEW NEWSLETTER

JANUARY 2020

Now that the holidays are behind us, it is time to charge full steam ahead into a new year, a new decade. Are you excited to see what 2020 will bring? Some of you already know that this year will bring some wonderful things your way: new babies, new grandbabies, weddings, graduations, etc. We would love to help you plan a quilt to mark these momentous occasions. Some of you know that this year will bring new challenges, perhaps new stresses: a career change, a move, the care of a loved one, your own health issues. Perhaps this year, you might want to—no—NEED—to make a point of attending our Thursday Sit & Sews or Monthly Mini Retreats for some much needed “friend and fabric therapy.” My point is, we are here for you! I want our shop to be your home away from home—not just a fabric store, but a gathering place of friends. You are more than just customers to us—you are our quilting family!

Love,

Denise

 JINGLE FOR YOUR JANUARY

Don’t forget to bring with you the RED ENVELOPES you received in December. Each envelope contains a coupon for a free gift and for a surprise discount. You may use one envelope per visit, and it must be unopened when you enter the shop.

UPCOMING CLASSES, EVENTS, PROGRAMS

JANUARY:

UFO CLUB 2020 has already begun, but it is not too late to join! What is a UFO? It is an Unfinished Fabric Object, and if you are like me, I am sure you have a few of them lying around! Joining our UFO club will help you complete some of those projects! Club meets the first Saturday of each month at 9:00. Come check us out! It is a great way to meet new friends and to gain inspiration and motivation. If you have any questions, just ask. Forms are available in the store, or just show up on February 1st!

THURSDAY SIT & SEWS: January 9, 23, 30, from 10:00-5:00. I think we should rename these “Friend & Fabric Therapy Sessions!” Our classroom will be open for anyone wanting to come sew and socialize. Bring your lunch or plan on eating at the Traveler’s Lantern. FREE. No need to sign up, just show up!

3 YARD QUILTS CLASS:
January 15, from 9:00-5:00. FREE. Many of you have already
purchased a 3 yard bundle and a pattern, but haven’t put it together. Now is the time! Our instructors will help you plan your cutting and sewing so that your project will be complete in no time! Class is free, but please register in advance so we know how many to prepare for.

TRUNK QUILTS CHARITY SEWING:January 16, from 10:00-4:00.The 3rd Thursday of each month, we will meet to sew together “trunk quilts”—small quilts that our law enforcement officers and social workers keep in their trunks to give to children who are involved in tragic or traumatic situations. These simple quilts give the children a warm hug and a measure of security at a very difficult time in their lives. Patterns and kits will be provided. If you are interested in making these quilts but cannot attend, we can also get you the information needed to make one at home. FREE. No need to register, just show up and sew!!

NEW MACHINE/BEGINNERS’ SEWING:January 18, from 9:00-1:00. So, you got a new machine for Christmas and you have no idea what to do with it?  Have a used one?  Or, you are a true beginner and want to learn to sew. This class is your first step! Join Denise as she walks you through the very basics of using a sewing machine. You will gain confidence using your machine by sewing a simple pillowcase. Once you know how to confidently operate your machine, you will be ready to tackle more challenging projects! The sky is the limit! Fee for the class is $20 and includes fabric of your choice for the pillowcase.

TRIP FOR 2 TO BOSTON CLASS: Saturday, January 25, from 9:00-5:00. Don’t you just love sewing with a friend? Well, grab a friend, and make matching quilts together! In this class, you and a friend will work as a team to assemble two coordinating quilt tops in the traditional Boston Common pattern. (You can be your own “friend,” but it won’t be nearly as much fun.) Denise is the instructor, so this is guaranteed to be a fun-filled day! Fee is $40 per team + pattern and supplies.

QUILTS OF VALOR (QOV) NATIONAL FOUNDATION SEW DAYS:January 31-February 2. Quilts of Valor is a program whose goal is to award quilts to service men and women as a means of thanking them for their selfless service to our country. The Trenton Community Center will be open from 8:30-6:00 on Friday and Saturday; from 10:00-4:00 on Sunday for this worthy sewing cause. Call and let us konw if your sure you will be there. Otherwise come when you can; help as you are able. We need people cutting, sewing, and pressing. Bring a couple of friends with you, and set up an assembly line. Or come by yourself and we will plug you in where you can be most helpful. We will have kits made up, ready to sew. Or, you may bring your own QOV project to complete. Our goal is to get at least 50 quilt tops assembled and ready to be quilted. Please join us—many hands make light the work.

FEBRUARY

BEGINNING QUILTING:Tuesday evenings, February 4, 11, 18, & 25, from 6:00-9:00. Since February’s weather is fickle at best, we have found that a 10-12 week Quilting 101 class ends up lasting a lot longer due to weather cancellations. So, Denise has designed a mini winter class for beginners to learn the basics of quilting—from cutting, to piecing, to setting, to finishing. Students will be constructing a 3 block table runner in this class. Fee is $50 + fabric & supplies. Please register for this class ASAP as spots are limited.

DIAMOND LOG CABIN STAR QUILT CLASS:

February 21 & 22, from 9:00-4:00. This may be your last chance to take a class with Carol Thurston, as she is moving out of state. This class features an original design by Carol, one that is breathtaking! Her pattern is included in the class fee. You will need to cut your strips ahead of time, so please sign up early and get your supply list. This class is appropriate for quilters with intermediate to advanced piecing skills. You will also need the Clearview 60 degree triangle ruler (10 or 12 inch), in addition to your fabrics. Fee is $75.

THURSDAY SIT & SEWS:
February 6, 13, 27, from 10:00-5:00. “Friend & Fabric Therapy Sessions.” See description above.

TRUNK QUILTS CHARITY SEWING: February 20, from 10:00-4:00. See description above.

CLASSROOM MINI RETREAT: February 28, 29, & March 1. Our classroom mini retreats offer you the chance to set up your work station and leave it all in place for multiple days if desired. It is a time of sewing, socializing, relaxing, unwinding. Plus, you will get a lot accomplished in your time. It is also a great chance to continue working on any class projects you were unable to finish within the time constraints of class. Doors open at 9:00 am. Many ladies choose to stay long past 5:00. As long as one of the key holders is available to stay late, you can, too!

LOOKING AHEAD:

LORI HOLT VINTAGE HOUSEWIFE SEW ALONG begins January 27th! You may sign up for her weekly blog posts at beeinmybonnetco.blogspot.com where she gives you the pattern for the weekly block and walks you through her construction process. She also features a lovely narrative describing her inspiration for that particular block. We will have ONLY 6 KITS for the Vintage Housewife quilt available, so call to reserve yours today! Fabric kits should be available for pickup by January 11 and will be $199.98. You may go ahead and pay for your kit to reserve it. A separate kit containing the trims, buttons, interfacing, and Sew Simple Shapes will be made available as soon as all back ordered items arrive in the shop. We will also be beginning a new Lori Holt club where you can come and work on any Lori Holt project you desire. Watch future newsletters for further details on that program.

***Edit: As of publication, 3 of the 6 kits have been reserved!

MYSTERY BLOCK OF THE MONTH (BOM) BEGINNING in February. This is a 12 month program, featuring fabric and instructions for one block per month. Each block will be $5. You may pay in advance for all 12 blocks ($60), or we can keep your card on file and charge it automatically each month. If you choose the second option, your card will be charged monthly, even if you do not pick up your block. Offered in 2 colorways-- Bright Spring or Christmas. You may choose to do one or both options. Toward the end of the program, a finishing kit will be available for purchase, if desired. You must sign up in advance and let us know which theme(s) you choose for your block. Blocks will be available the 3rd Saturday of each month, beginning February 15th. This is a 12 month commitment! Beginners to advanced, this BOM is for you. The blocks are easy, and the borders are striking.
